Despite recent trademark news about Onimusha. I've been curious about trying Genma Onimusha on the original Xbox. I never hear too much about that version and am currently a bit afraid that if a Onimusha HD collection happens, the changes from this version might be looked over.
It has been ages since i've played the original. But I recall these were the biggest changes (which were conveniently on the back of the box).
As far as I recall. These differences have never made it into any other iteration of the game. Even when the title hit Greatest Hits (Unlike the Silent Hill 2 Xbox Changes which did just that). The game in general seems to be cheap as a collectors items. Even complete in box, it's easy to find for about $12.
I don't expect many replies to this thread. Since it seems the amount of people who have played this version are rather low. But was wondering if the new areas and green soul are good additions to the base game. I've heard back and forth on the new additions. With most of the talk mainly going into the higher difficulty this version has, which can be seen as a positive or a negative. So any impressions on that would be great.
Also here's a graphic comparison, since I figured someone would bring it up.

It would be if it wasn't for the bad Xbox D-Pad.

I'd say Genma is better than the original. The visuals seem a bit sharper and gameplay-wise there were some cool enhancements. The evil possessed doll could be a pain at times but it was a bit like Nemesis from RE3 (which wasn't too long before this game).

This may be off topic but I was not ware that Onimusha was on xbox, for some reason I thought the series was only on Playstation. I guess you learn something new everyday.

I played the PS2 original and a little bit of the Original Xbox version, and from what I remember, the controls will bother the crap out of you for the Xbox version. Even if you're able to play the game on an Xbox 360, that controller's D-Pad is somehow worse than the Original Xbox controller. There's no way to play the game with an analog stick. Oh, also, the game itself is much harder but not in a good way. There are insta-kills especially from this creepy doll that chases you around from room to room. It's more frustrating and unfair than it should be.

So are people generally assuming that all the Onimusha games are being re-released? I've been replaying them on original PS2 hardware, mainly because I figured getting all of the likeness rights again wouldn't be worth it to Capcom.

I like the additions, personally. The doll is maybe a bit daft (better to just run if you can) but the transformation they added was a nice touch.
I prefer it to the original.

Not sure but I would like either version to release as a classic on their respective console family. It's time for this series to return.

Yeah I think the game had a weird button layout as well (been ages since I've played it but still own it). Having said that, Genma is dramatically more difficult. Basically enemies will try to absorb orbs before you and if they're able to absorb orbs then the enemy will become faster and more aggressive. I can't remember the other differences right now but that's the one that always stood out

They're about equal really. The new additions dont really change the game. Play whatever is easier for you to access

It was my first Onimusha game.
Loved it and made me a fan.
The doll still scares the little 10 year old me.
It was amazing.

The doll was an interesting addition, but I felt it took away from the game as it felt like they slapped it in for no real reason. Also, controls with the Xbox controller were far worse than with the DS2, but that's all a matter of opinion

It's basically a Nemesis sort of deal. Doesn't show up as much as he does though. Your best bet is to run but if you defeat it I seem to remember you getting some goodies.

Yes, it was the definitive version of Onimusha for me and possibly the best game in the series. All the extra mechanics and features really flesh out the original game. They took a good game and made it great.

As I recall only the first game got an enhanced port and the rest were all on PS2 except for the spin off Onimusha tactics on gba.
I played both op but honestly can't remember much outside the better visuals as it was a long time ago. Really hoping for an HD collection.

Is Onimusha 1 really old school RE with swords like some people say? How similar is it in that sense?

I haven't played it yet but it is supposed to be a way more challenging game !

Nope, it's pretty much the opposite for the trilogy. A DoD remaster can happen though !

Is it possible to use a DS2 on Xbox ?

Yeah basically. Pre-rendered graphics, tank controls, fixed camera angles, the works.

I played Genma first, and I didn't have a particular issue butting up against the difficulty. My playstyle in these games is pretty cautious though. When I did go back to the original on PS2, it felt a little too straightforward, but it was years later, and that could have been a headspace thing. Visually and feature-wise, I don't think there's any question that Genma is better.

I actually have had this for about a year and never played it, so I'm gonna definitely give it a go. I bought it when I saw it at a game store because it was cheap and more importantly, I was stunned that I had no idea it was ever on Xbox.

Do some people here own the JP version of Genma ? I'd like to know if the text puzzles are in English or Japanese.

Maybe if Capcom released this version, it would've sold better. Or all of them in a collection.

Yes. It most definitely is (in my opinion).
